Dr. Carol Viera's Biography

Carol Viera is a performing arts psychologist and coach, co-director of the Frequency Band, and owner of Air-ev Productions.

Born in Massachusetts, Dr. Viera was drawn to music at an early age, first performing in recital as a solo vocalist at age six (as she emerged from a gift-wrapped laundry basket) and as a pianist at age eight. Later, originally sparked by need, then by curiosity and value, she pursued music business and production.

Alongside her musical pursuits, and fueled by a life-long love of science, discovery and the human possibility, Dr. Viera enjoys an active career as a clinical psychologist and professional coach working exclusively with musicians.  Her areas of specialization include cognitive psychology, neurospychology, nutritional/health psychology and, what she terms, "psychoeducational mentoring."

This marriage of two disciplines (music and psychology), together with "living inside the music world," have made her especially well-suited to understanding and addressing the complex professional and lifestyle challenges facing musicians.

Dr. Viera's formal training includes degrees from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst (B.A. in psychology, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), Boston College (M.Ed. in rehabilitation, psychology) and the University of Illinois in Chicago (M.A. in psychology, clinical-cognitive, clinical neuropsychology; Ph.D. in psychology, clinical-cognitive, clinical neuropsychology). Within these disciplines, she has won numerous awards for academic, clinical and research excellence. Further, Dr. Viera studied piano and voice privately, music business at Berklee College of Music and received coach training from MentorCoach (the international leader of coach training for mental health practitioners).

During her graduate and postdoctoral training in psychology, Dr. Viera's primary mentors included international leaders in the fields of imagery-based cognitive research and therapies (T.X. Barber, Ph.D. and Joseph Cautela, Ph.D.) and mind-body medicine (Ted J. Kapchuk, OMD, psychotherapy, nutrition and alternative therapies in treating chronic pain and stress). Other important mentors were Jonathan Lieff, M.D. (psychotherapy and the effects of food on behavior) and Donald A. Davidoff, Ph.D. (psychotherapy and neuropsychology). At Berklee College of Music, she studied with faculty at the cutting edge of an industry in transition, including George Howard.

Dr. Viera is a member of the American Psychological Association Divisions of the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts, Clinical Neuropsychology, and Media Psychology; the Performing Arts Medicine Association; the International Society of Mental Health Online; and the International Coach Federation.

While her clinical and research experience with various performing artists began earlier, for two decades Dr. Viera has worked primarily with musicians, exploring with them the mental and physical ecologies and trainings which promote and enhance their lives and "essence music" potential. "I am most inspired by helping serious musicians recognize, appreciate and bring to fullest expression their most important instrument, namely, their 'human instrument,' because when they discover the potential in this, their music-making, and world view, can shift in ways better tuned to who they are and what they want."  She adds, "Put simply, and not unlike sports psychologists who help athletes appreciate and develop an often overlooked but very powerful asset, their minds, I work with musicians on their mental game and its direct application to all levels of their playing, technically and musically."

Dr. Viera has served on the faculties of the Tanglewood Music Center and the Longy School of Music and considers psycho-educational mentoring to be foremost in her approach when working with musicians. "It's not about telling others the 'right answers.' It's about offering means and ways and encouraging and supporting individuals and groups as they consider options and decide what it is they want. This kind of self-chosen journey yields lasting results, rather than a quick but fading fix, because those with whom I am working co-create the road map and take responsibility for traveling the course."

As a licensed clinical psychologist and coach, Dr. Viera, in addition to working individually with musicians (both face-to-face and virtually), works jointly with her husband, internationally acclaimed trombonist, composer and educator, Norman Bolter. This team has authored several papers and booklets on music-making, including "Methods of Effective Practice," "It's Not All in the Air and "The Metronome Meditation," and conduct master classes in the USA and abroad.

Dr Viera is co-founder of the Frequency Band and owner/creative director of Air-ev Productions. With Mr. Bolter, she co-leads ongoing Frequency Band workshops and OPTs locally in Boston and worldwide and co-directs the Frequency Band performance ensemble.
